Sanjena Sathian’s Gold Diggers is the Vox Book Club pick for May

The Vox Book Club is linking to to support local and independent booksellers. This May, pull up an easy chair to the Vox Book Club and join us in reading Sanjena Sathian’s Gold Diggers . It’s a propulsive, immersive debut novel that deals with over-achieving high schoolers, ambition, alchemy, and a big question: “What does it mean to be both Indian and, like, American?” Despite how flippant her characters may be about that question, Sathian always approaches it with her eyes open. The result is a tender, affectionate novel that manages to be a love story and a cautionary tale and a heist story all in one. We’ll have tons to talk about. We’ll be meeting with Sathian live on Zoom on Wednesday, May 19, at 5 pm Eastern, and we’d love to see you there. Subscribe to the Vox Book Club newsletter, and we’ll send you an RSVP link as soon as it’s available . Here’s the full Vox Book Club schedule for May 2021 Friday, May 14: Discussion post on Gold Diggers published t

Space Photos of the Week: Happy Birthday, Hubble!

NASA launched the Hubble Space Telescope on April 24, 1990, and Hubble has been busy observing the universe ever since. In honor of its 30th birthday, we’ll explore some of its most memorable and mind-blowing photos, starting with the anniversary photo. This image contains two nebulas both nicknamed the Cosmic Reef. When stars are born or when they die, they often shed material with such great force that it molds and shapes the environment around the star, creating a nebula. Some nebulas are created by the death of a singular star, while others are existing interstellar dust and gas that function as stellar nurseries for young stars. Some of the most famous nebulas are in the shape of horseheads, crabs, and other fanciful objects. Hubble has taught us a lot in its 30 years. Thanks to Hubble we now know that our galaxy is just one of many hundreds of billions in the universe. Because Hubble is able to study such distant galaxies, it can tell scientists more about the expansion

Vanessa Lachey to star in NCIS: Hawai'i

Vanessa Lachey Photo : Paras Griffin ( Getty Images ) The NCIS franchise—the unstoppable, unkillable, inescapable TV procedural juggernaut that capitalizes cruelly on our shared obsession with crimes that take place on or near the water—is now headed even further afield. Which is to say that THR is reporting this evening that CBS is moving forward on the long-in-development NCIS: Hawai’i , with BH90210 ‘s Vanessa Lachey stepping up to become the franchise’s first female lead. As with previous spin-offs Los Angeles and New Orleans (to say nothing of the just-renewed mothership show , still the most-watched scripted drama on TV ), Hawai’i concerns itself with an elite department of the Navy’s beloved Boat Crimes division, in this case based out of Pearl Harbor. (It’s not actually called “Boat Crimes,” that’s just how we always file it in our heads.) Lachey will play Jane Tennant, whose major character traits are…Actually, you know what? Amazon rainforest loss is rising again in Brazil

This story is part of Down to Earth , a new Vox reporting initiative on the science, politics, and economics of the biodiversity crisis. We’re just four months into the year and things are already looking bleak in the Brazilian Amazon. About 430,000 acres of its lush, species-rich forests have been logged or burned so far in 2021, according to a new analysis of satellite imagery by the Monitoring of the Andean Amazon Project (MAAP). That’s an area roughly 30 times the size of Manhattan. The analysis, published earlier this week, comes as Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, is negotiating a deal with US officials to funnel what could be billions of dollars into his administration to eliminate illegal deforestation within the decade. At President Joe Biden’s Climate Leaders Summit last week, President Bolsonaro vowed Brazil would become carbon neutral by 2050 and recommitted to net-zero deforestation by 2030 — a target his government had previously deserted. “We could not a

Google's Grand Plan to Eradicate Cookies Is Crumbling

Millions of people are already part of a global experiment to eradicate cookies once and for all. Since last month, Google has been trialling new browser-based tech in Chrome that could upend the global advertising industry. Most people involved in the trial probably don’t even realize it—but as the project gathers pace, critical voices are raising the alarm. WIRED UK  This story originally appeared on WIRED UK .  Regulators in Germany, France, and Belgium are all scrutinizing Google’s proposals. At the same time, some of the world’s biggest websites have decided to skip Google’s trials entirely, with a number of companies developing ways for people to dodge the system. The system, known as Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC) , is part of Google’s bigger Privacy Sandbox plan that will bring about the end of third-party advertising cookies early in 2022. There are broadly three ways websites pick which ads to show you. You might see an ad for a pair of sneakers becaus

Game Of Thrones' Esmé Bianco sues Marilyn Manson for sexual assault

Esmé Bianco Photo : Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for WIRED It’s been three months since allegations of sexual abuse against musician Marilyn Manson first began to pick up widespread attention, led by accusations from his former partner Evan Rachel Wood . Spurred on by Woods’ accounts of rape and other abuse at the hands of Manson (whose real name is Brian Warner), multiple other women soon came forward with similar stories, including actress Esmé Bianco, who gave a long account to The Cut detailing the frequently abusive nature of her relationship with Warner. Now, TMZ reports , Bianco has sued both Warner and his former manager, Tony Ciulla, accusing Warner of rape and sexual battery. Ciulla and his management company, meanwhile, are accused of violating human trafficking laws , in relation to Bianco’s first major contact with Warner, in which she says she was hired to appear in a music video. Bianco traveled to the United States from London for the shoot —at which p
