BlackBerry and Nokia Phones Are Coming Back - With a Twist

The 2017 smartphone cycle is about to kick off in earnest, and there are some familiar names fighting to come back into the fold. BlackBerry Mobile announced this week that a new phone – complete with a physical keyboard and dubbed the “Mercury” – will debut Feb. 25 at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show. That follows hard on the heels of an announcement from Nokia, which teased the Chinese launch of its new Nokia 6 phone ahead of a larger Feb. 26 launch event . Nokia ? BlackBerry ? What’s next, the return of Baby-G watches? It may all feel a bit 2002 seeing these phone brands come back into the spotlight, but here’s the thing: These are not the phone brands that you think they are. Both of the new smartphones are made by different companies than the ones we knew and loved, as a result of complicated licensing agreements. The company you know as BlackBerry – Canadian, security-conscious – is focusing its efforts on software to augment smartphones and its auto efforts

No, the Golden Globes don’t “predict” the Oscars

Image
The 78th Golden Globe Awards were handed out on Sunday, February 28 — about two weeks before the nominations for the 93nd Academy Awards, a.k.a. the Oscars, are set to be announced on Monday, March 15. (The Oscars will take place April 25; the usual timeline was pushed back by about two months this year because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.) The Golden Globes are known to be an oddball ceremony , partly due to their open bar. This year they were even weirder than usual, since the pandemic made the customary packed ballroom unsafe. Instead, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted from opposite coasts, joined by a small number of masked and socially distanced front-line workers as guests. Some of the awards presenters took the stage in person; others read nominees’ and winners’ names through a screen. And winners accepted their awards from home, beamed into the ceremony via videoconferencing software while all decked out in their ball gowns and tuxes and, in some cases, hoodie

International Space Station Being Prepped for New Solar Panels

Spacewalking astronauts ventured out Sunday to install support frames for new, high-efficiency solar panels arriving at the International Space Station later this year. NASA’s Kate Rubins and Victor Glover put the first set of mounting brackets and struts together, then bolted them into place next to the station’s oldest and most degraded solar wings. But the work took longer than expected, and they barely got started on the second set before calling it quits. Rubins will finish the job during a second spacewalk later this week. The spacewalkers had to lug out the hundreds of pounds of mounting brackets and struts in 8-foot (2.5-meter) duffle-style bags. The equipment was so big and awkward that it had to be taken apart like furniture, just to get through the hatch. Some of the attachment locations required extra turns of the power drill and still weren’t snug enough, as indicated by black lines. The astronauts had to use a ratchet wrench to deal with the more stubborn bolt

Jane Fonda dedicated her Golden Globes speech to honoring Black-led projects

Screenshot : NBC Jane Fonda remains an absolute legend . Not only is she an incredible actress, but she’s dedicated her entire career to bringing awareness to social justice and environmental issues. Fonda was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes, and she used the opportunity to bring awareness to the hard work Black actors, filmmakers, and crew put into making some of the most notable projects in the past year. “Just this year, Nomadland helped me feel love for the wanderers among us and Minari opened my eyes to the experience of immigrants dealing with the realities of life in a new land, and Judas and the Black Messiah , Small Axe , United States vs. Billie Holiday , Ma Rainey and One Night in Miami… and others have deepened my empathy for what being Black has meant,” she said. She also mentioned I May Destroy You , the Golden Globes’ biggest snub of the year, saying it “taught [her] to consider sexual violence in a whole new way.

Google Clips Automatic Camera Bites the Dust, Pulled From Company Store

Google appears to have has quietly retired its AI-powered camera product ‘Google Clips’, because the actual product listing has been removed from the company’ s online store. Google Clips was launched in 2017 for $249 (roughly Rs. 18,000). It features a 12-megapixel sensor, 130-degree field-of-view lens and 8GB of internal memory. The camera is designed to hold off from taking any picture until it sees the faces it recognises. If a user doesn’t want Google Clips to capture the moment it deems fit, there is also a shutter button on the camera as well as one in the corresponding app to capture other moments or subjects as they see fit. Google at launch said the magic sauce behind the Google Clips is machine learning. From the moment a user switches on Clips, the camera begins to look for good moments to capture. The camera lights up when it is taking the image or a shot, the company said. It was important, an executive said, adding that privacy is a crucial element in Clips. Ad

Golden Globes winners 2021: The full list

The 2021 Golden Globes have arrived, bringing their typical chaos and confusion to an atypical awards year. Thanks to the pandemic, this year’s ceremony is happening two months later than usual, with hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey overseeing a bicoastal, largely virtual affair. Since it’s not safe to gather a ton of people inside one theater, none of the traditional open-bar chaos will ensue (though that’s no guarantee that people won’t be getting sloppy on their webcams). The Golden Globes will air live on TV (on NBC and streaming services that carry the network , starting at 8 pm ET), and despite recent controversies and their reputation as the goofiest major entertainment industry awards show, they’ll still function as a prominent kickoff to 2021’s delayed awards season, thus maintaining their not-really-but-sometimes status as an Oscar indicator. We’ll be updating this winners list live throughout the telecast. You can follow along below — just remember to not take an
